Mosaic Zellige

Handcrafted in Morocco from natural clay, SERA Mosaic Zellige brings a graphic sensibility to the rich texture of traditional Zellige. Subtle variations in colour, surface and edges soften the geometry of each design, giving every tile its own expression within the repeating pattern.

The collection explores square frames and curved arches, with contrasting tones that create rhythm across a surface. From a small decorative detail to a larger composition, these patterns bring together defined shapes and the warmth of handmade clay.

Geometry with a human touch.

Zellige FAQs

What is Zellige and how is it made?

Zellige is a traditional Moroccan tile handcrafted from natural clay. Each tile is individually formed, dried, kiln-fired, glazed and finished by skilled artisans using methods passed down through generations.

Because the tiles are shaped and fired by hand, the glaze responds differently across every surface. Subtle shifts in colour, reflection, texture and form are therefore part of the material itself rather than effects added during industrial production.

The result is a living surface in which every tile carries its own character while contributing to the depth and rhythm of the complete installation.

What variation should I expect?

No two Zellige tiles are exactly alike. Differences in tone, colour intensity, sheen, dimensions, thickness, texture and edge shape are inherent characteristics of authentic handmade Zellige.

Individual tiles may feature gentle undulations, pinholes, small pits, glaze movement, fine crazing, mineral markings and occasional small edge chips. These features are part of the traditional material and are not considered manufacturing defects.

Samples and website images provide a general indication of the colour and character but cannot represent the full range of variation. Tiles may also differ between production batches and individual kiln firings. For this reason, we recommend ordering the full quantity required for your project at the same time.

Where can SERA Zellige be used?

Depending on the format, substrate and installation system, SERA Zellige may be suitable for interior walls, kitchen backsplashes, shower and steam-shower walls, wet-room walls, selected dry floors with limited traffic, exterior walls, fountains, water features, and fireplace surrounds and hearths.

Exterior installations are suitable only where the tiles will not be exposed to freeze–thaw cycles. Zellige is not intended for use inside a firebox or in areas exposed to direct flame or intense heat.

Floors, wet areas, exterior surfaces and fireplace applications require professional assessment. Always check the applications shown on the individual product page before ordering.

Does glazed Zellige need sealing, and how should it be cleaned?

Glazed Zellige used in dry interior areas does not generally require sealing. A pre-grout treatment or penetrating protective product may be recommended when using contrasting grout, where areas of exposed clay are present, or in wet, exterior or particularly stain-prone applications.

The appropriate treatment should be selected by an experienced installer and tested on a spare tile before general use.

For regular cleaning, use warm water and a soft cloth, sponge or mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acidic products, bleach, abrasive powders, metal brushes and harsh chemicals, as these may damage or dull the glazed surface.

What should I know before ordering and installation?

We recommend ordering an additional 25% above the measured installation area. This provides material for cutting, on-site selection, complex layouts, installation breakage and future repairs. Projects involving complex geometry or particularly careful tile selection may require an allowance of 30–35%.

Before installation, open all boxes, inspect the material and blend tiles from different boxes. A dry layout should be completed to distribute the natural variation evenly and agree the final composition before fixing begins.

SERA Zellige should be installed by a qualified professional experienced in handmade tile. Do not begin installation if there are concerns regarding the product, quantity, intended application or visible condition.
