Terracotta

Handcrafted in Morocco from natural clay, SERA Terracotta celebrates the material in its most elemental form. Left unglazed, each tile reveals the natural colour, texture and subtle tonal variation of the clay, shaped by hand and transformed through firing.

Warm, tactile and quietly irregular, terracotta brings an earthy depth to floors, walls, kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor living spaces. Its raw surface sits naturally alongside stone, timber and other honest materials, while developing greater character and a softer patina through use and time.

Clay, fire and time — nothing unnecessary.

Terracotta FAQs

What is SERA Terracotta and how is it made?

SERA Terracotta is an unglazed clay tile made from natural clay and kiln-fired without a glazed surface. The material retains the colour, texture and mineral character of the clay itself.

Each tile is formed and finished individually, creating subtle differences in tone, texture, dimensions and edges. Unlike glazed Zellige, Terracotta has a naturally matt, porous surface that develops greater depth and character with use.

Over time, the material may gradually develop a natural patina, particularly on floors and frequently used surfaces.

What variation should I expect?

Variation is inherent to handmade Terracotta. Individual tiles may show differences in tone, colour intensity, texture, dimensions, thickness and edge shape.

Natural markings, small pits, surface irregularities, kiln marks and slight tonal differences are characteristic of the material and should not be considered defects.

Because Terracotta is unglazed, variations in the clay itself are more visible than in glazed tile. Samples provide only a general indication of the final appearance, and different production batches may vary.

Where can SERA Terracotta be used?

SERA Terracotta may be suitable for residential floors, kitchens, hallways, living spaces, bathrooms, selected wall applications and covered outdoor areas.

Its natural matt surface makes it particularly suited to interiors where a warmer, more tactile and aged material character is desired.

Wet areas, exterior installations and heavily trafficked floors require an appropriate substrate, sealing system and professional assessment. Exterior use should be avoided where the material may be exposed to damaging freeze-thaw cycles unless the complete installation system has been specifically approved for those conditions.

Does Terracotta need sealing, and how should it be cleaned?

Yes. Unglazed Terracotta is naturally porous and should normally be sealed as part of the installation process.

The appropriate penetrating sealer should be selected according to the intended application and desired final appearance. A pre-grout treatment is generally recommended to reduce staining and prevent grout from penetrating the surface.

Always test the chosen treatment on spare tiles before installation. For routine cleaning, use warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners, bleach, aggressive degreasers, abrasive powders and metal brushes.

What should I know before ordering and installation?

We recommend ordering approximately 25% more than the measured installation area for cutting, selection, installation breakage and future repairs. Complex layouts may require a larger allowance.

Before installation, open all boxes and blend tiles from different boxes to distribute natural colour and texture variation throughout the surface.

Because Terracotta is porous, the installer should carefully plan sealing, grouting and final protection before work begins. Installation should be carried out by a professional experienced with handmade and unglazed clay tile.
