Bejmat

Handcrafted in Morocco from natural clay, SERA Bejmat follows the same artisanal tradition as Zellige in a distinctive elongated format. Each tile is individually formed, cut and glazed by hand, creating subtle variations in tone, texture, edges and surface reflection.

Its slender proportion introduces a more directional rhythm, allowing Bejmat to be laid in running bond, stacked, herringbone and other architectural compositions. Used across kitchens, bathrooms, walls and feature surfaces, it combines the depth and irregularity of handmade Zellige with a more linear, graphic character.

Traditional in origin. Architectural in expression.

Bejmat FAQs

What is Bejmat and how is it made?

Bejmat is a traditional Moroccan clay tile distinguished by its elongated rectangular format. Like Zellige, each tile is individually formed from natural clay, dried, kiln-fired, glazed and finished by skilled artisans.

The handmade process gives every piece subtle differences in surface, colour, glaze and geometry. These variations create the characteristic depth and movement of a Bejmat installation and distinguish it from machine-made tile.

Bejmat can be laid in a wide range of patterns, including straight, staggered, herringbone and basketweave layouts.

What variation should I expect?

Natural variation is an essential characteristic of handmade Bejmat. Tiles may differ slightly in colour intensity, sheen, dimensions, thickness, surface texture and edge shape.

Small pits, pinholes, glaze movement, fine crazing, mineral markings and occasional edge irregularities may occur and are considered part of the traditional character of the material rather than manufacturing defects.

Samples and website images show the general colour and finish but cannot represent every variation within a production batch. We recommend ordering the full quantity required for the project at the same time.

Where can SERA Bejmat be used?

Depending on the installation system and substrate, SERA Bejmat may be used on interior walls, kitchen backsplashes, bathrooms, shower walls, wet-room walls, selected residential floors, fireplace surrounds and certain exterior surfaces.

Its elongated format is particularly suitable for herringbone, running-bond and other directional layouts.

Exterior, wet-area, floor and fireplace installations should always be assessed by an experienced installer. Exterior use is recommended only where the material will not be exposed to damaging freeze-thaw conditions.

Does glazed Bejmat need sealing, and how should it be cleaned?

Glazed Bejmat used on dry interior walls does not generally require sealing. However, a penetrating protective treatment may be recommended where exposed clay edges are present, when using contrasting grout, or for wet, exterior or stain-prone applications.

Any sealer or pre-grout treatment should be tested on a spare tile before installation.

For regular cleaning, use warm water with a soft cloth, sponge or mop and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners, bleach, abrasive products, metal brushes and harsh chemicals.

What should I know before ordering and installation?

We recommend ordering approximately 25% more than the measured installation area to allow for cutting, pattern layouts, natural selection, installation breakage and future repairs. Complex herringbone or other geometric layouts may require a higher allowance.

Before installation, open all boxes and blend tiles from different boxes to distribute natural variations in colour and surface evenly.

A dry layout is strongly recommended, especially for patterned installations. SERA Bejmat should be installed by a professional familiar with handmade Moroccan tile.
